Taller Boricua was established in El Barrio of East Harlem in 1969 and was incorporated in 1970 as the Puerto Rican Workshop Inc.—a non-profit arts organization. Its mission remains today in bringing attention and relevancy to artist who are unrepresented and  marginalized by the cultural gatekeepers of the times. Its political artistic engagement with the Young Lords Party, who were headquartered across their street, infused inspiration to the rise of the social,  cultural and poetic Nuyorican Movement.
