Albert Justiniano

Albert Justiniano is a visual artist and educator whose work emerges from the rich cultural landscape of New York City, where he was born and raised in the Lower East Side of Manhattan and currently resides in Central Harlem. For over five decades, Justiniano has cultivated a distinctive artistic practice that synthesizes cultural symbolism, spiritual inquiry, and personal narrative to create paintings that resonate with profound emotional depth and universal human experience.

Justiniano’s artistic vision centers on the exploration of cultural identity through the lens of his Puerto Rican heritage, weaving together spiritual and religious iconography with contemporary visual language. His works of art present familiar objects displaced into unexpected contexts, creating surreal compositions that invite contemplation and personal reflection. This deliberate juxtaposition serves as a bridge between the conscious and unconscious mind, allowing viewers to access memories and emotions that might otherwise remain dormant.

The artist’s work functions as both mirror and sanctuary, providing viewers with a safe space to engage with their own cultural and spiritual identities. Through his masterful use of symbolism, Justiniano creates visual narratives that speak to shared human experiences while honoring the specificity of cultural memory. tHis paintings achieve a delicate balance between the universal and the particular, offering harmony while simultaneously evoking diverse personal responses from each observer.

Drawing inspiration from life’s pivotal moments and everyday encounters, Justiniano transforms personal experience into collective understanding. His artistic process serves as a form of emotional and spiritual communication, creating imagery that not only reflects his own journey but also provides pathways for others to explore their inner landscapes. This approach positions art as a transformative medium capable of fostering self-awareness and healing.

Justiniano’s extensive professional background encompasses both commercial design and fine arts education. His twenty-one years as an art director and creative director in advertising design provided him with technical expertise and visual literacy that inform his current practice. For the past twenty-four years, he has dedicated himself to arts education, teaching visual arts to students with special needs in the New York City Department of Education system. This commitment to education extends to his roles as Adjunct Professor at Brooklyn College and Boricua College, where he has taught visual arts, painting, drawing techniques and art history.

The recognition of Justiniano as the 2017 “Art Educator of the Year” for Region 8 of The New York State Art Teachers Association reflects his profound impact on arts education. Through his teaching, he has witnessed art’s transformative power in fostering positive behavioral changes, building self-esteem, and instilling pride in his students. This educational philosophy directly informs his artistic practice, reinforcing his belief in art’s capacity to heal and empower.

Justiniano’s academic credentials include a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from New York University, Master of Science degrees in School Administration and a Dual Master in General and Special Education from Touro College, and a Bachelor of Technology in Communication Arts and Graphic Design from New York City College of Technology. His foundational training at the High School of Art and Design and subsequent studies at The Art Students League have provided him with classical techniques that he continues to employ in contemporary contexts.

Currently a member and active artist at Taller Boricua Rafael Tufiño Printshop, Justiniano remains committed to community-based artistic practice and cultural preservation. His ongoing involvement with the New York City Art Teacher’s Association as a Board Member demonstrates his dedication to advancing arts education and supporting fellow educators.
